One of the areas of Stockholm that’s a little bit closer to heart for us is of course our beloved Gamla stan (Stockholm’s Old Town). Most visitors of the city sooner or later chose to visit the city district, due to is colourful houses, narrow streets and old buildings.
It’s no wonder the area, clamped in the middle of central Stockholm, is so popular to visitors of the city. It houses many attractions; the Royal Palace, Stortorget, the Cathedral, the Iron-boy and many more. As if this wasn’t enough, it’s filled with cobblestoned streets and cute houses, since the area originates back to the 1300th century (!). Therefore, it’s filled with medieval alleyways and cool architecture. It’s a treat just to get lost in Stockholm’s Old Town.
Until 1980, Gamla stan was officially called “The Town between the Bridges”, referring to it’s position as being in between islands. We think both names are suitable, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s the essence, soul and spirit that can only be found in the Old Town that’s special. How you can go from being in a crowded group of tourists on one street to – all of the sudden – almost being alone on another.
