Lifestyle in Scandinavia
The lifestyle in Scandinavia is world-famous, with people in the region being named the happiest on the planet. So we completely understand why you’d want to visit, and that’s why we love showing people our beloved capitals.
So, what’s so great about living in Scandinavia?
Uh, pretty much everything! Scandinavians are known for their friendly, easy-going nature … and their love of nature! With fresh air, mountains, fjords, lakes, beaches, and dense forests surrounding the cities kept clean by proud citizens, you’ll return home with a few Scandic ideas to integrate into your life.
Once a great world super-power, Sweden is much more relaxed these days. People are well known for working hard, including putting effort into feeling chilled, with family being an important consideration of daily life. In Stockholm, you’ll see what we mean; a vibrant, urban landscape with plenty of green space and the blue waters to ensure citizens and visitors always feel connected to nature. It also explains why Swedes are so environmentally-focussed. One pastime you can enjoy is Fika – the Swedish ‘hobby’ of having a coffee and something to eat, like a delicious pastry. So Swedes know how to indulge…but in moderation! Indeed ‘Lagom’ is a common term, meaning ‘the right balance’ and many people in Sweden naturally have this balanced way of viewing the world. Though if you’re visiting, indulge away! Leave the balance to those who live in Sweden.
The balance of working hard and loving nature is a part of the lifestyle in Scandinavia you feel in Oslo too. This Fjord City has the inland ocean waves to the South with gorgeous green hills and forests surrounding the urban area. With 55 parks in the city itself, you’re never more than a ten-minute walk to a place of nature, wherever you live or are staying. A relatively newly sovereign country – only fully independent since 1905 – Norwegians are known for their sense of taking care of one another. In this social-democracy, the infrastructure, including the education system and public transport, as well as the general sense of supportive community, can be felt and seen. So much so that you can easily flow around the city feeling Oslo is more a small town than the capital of Norway. Seeing the locals care for their fellow Norwegians and the place they live in makes for a lovely warm vibe – even in the coldest of Norwegian winters!
Last, and by no means least, Copenhagen is the capital of contentment, with Denmark often topping the list of the happiest countries in the world! A spirit of fairness, equality and a strong sense of collective social responsibility exists in Denmark. With a general sense of trust in its government (wait…WHAT?!) there are attitudes in Denmark that value self-respect..such as you NEVER work on weekends! Though we do, but only so you don’t miss the opportunity to see this great city. Danes know how to relax and take care of themselves; swimming in the capital’s harbour or visiting one of the many beaches along the coast. They’re also particularly indulgent in their meat, confectionery, beer and coffee consumption…all part of the good life you can get a slice of when you visit too!
