What does a well-preserved 1600s palace, theatre and pavilion give you? A UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our Drottningholm Palace Private Walking Tour, we’ll travel by steamer to explore Drottningholm Palace and its gardens.
The story about the tour
Step back in time as you board a steamer from the 1800s with your private guide and make the one-hour journey up Lake Mälaren to Drottningholm Palace, cruising up Sweden’s third largest lake passing through the inner-city of Stockholm. As you float deeper into the countryside, winding your way between islands, a yellow building will appear in the distance, slowly getting closer. You have arrived at the majestic Drottningholm Palace in the fashion that was first used.
What’s so special about Drottningholm, you ask? The remarkably well-preserved palace and surrounding grounds earned this 1600s former summer residence a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1991. Additionally comprised of Drottningholm Palace Theatre, Chinese Pavilion and the Palace Park, it’s definitely a place where you could spend lots of time. Easily accessible to all, locals are often seen walking in the park or picnicking under the oak trees as dogs play in the dog park on its own separate island.
If that’s not enough, it’s also the permanent residence of the King and Queen of Sweden. They moved out here in 1981, being the first royals to make this palace a permanent home. Since then, they have raised their children in peaceful surroundings and now welcome grandchildren to run around in their parent’s footsteps.
On our royal outing, we’ll enjoy a tour of the palace followed by a leisurely stroll through the gardens to the Chinese Pavilion and back. Two hours later, it’s time to catch the boat back to Stockholm. Arriving back to the quay at Stockholm City Hall, wave goodbye to your private guide, and tick this fabulous UNESCO World Heritage Site off your list.
